About us

ODI (www.odi.org.uk) aims to inspire and inform policy and practice to reduce poverty by locking together high-quality applied research and practical policy advice.

We are seeking a Senior Research Fellow to develop and undertake research, policy advisory and public affairs work with a view to informing and inspiring humanitarian policy at international and country level. You will support Humanitarian Policy Group’s (HPG) integrated research programme, with a particular focus on the Informality and Protection strand.

HPG is one of the world’s leading teams of policy researchers and information professionals working on humanitarian issues. It combines high-quality policy analysis with a capacity to act as a neutral forum for dialogue and debate.

Recent highlights include:

  • Humanitarian access and local organisations in Ukraine

  • What’s the magic word? Humanitarian access and local organisations in Syria

  • Time to let go: remaking humanitarian action for the modern era

  • Central African Republic: addressing the protection crisis

  • Protection of civilians in armed conflict: bridging the gap between law and reality

  • International and local/diaspora actors in the Syria response

  • Strengthening access and proximity to serve the needs of people in conflict

About the job

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • research and policy advisory work: conducting high-quality applied research

· public affairs: disseminating and promoting the programme’s work and ideas

  • fundraising: attracting funds through bids, marketing and the development of a substantial personal research portfolio.

About you:

  • a degree and post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline;
  • extensive and deep knowledge of key humanitarian and development issues and organisations;
  • Extensive knowledge on past and current issues and debates related to the protection of civilians in armed conflict;
  • Expertise in international humanitarian and human rights law; understanding of issues related to counter-terrorism legislation;
  • extensive and deep knowledge of the history humanitarian action, the nature of the international humanitarian system and the politics of aid;
  • fluency in English, and preferably a good command of at least one other language
  • experience in policy-oriented research, demonstrated by a track record of publications and reports;
  • extensive experience working in crisis-affected countries;
  • experience of extended ‘immersion’ in a conflict context
  • strong research and analytical skills
  • a demonstrated capacity for policy advisory or public-affairs work, based on an analytical approacha demonstrated ability to translate research ideas into fundable projects
