The UK’s leading independent think tank on international development and humanitarian issues.

About us

ODI (www.odi.org.uk) aims to inspire and inform policy and practice to reduce poverty by locking together high-quality applied research and practical policy advice.

We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to join ALNAP. The Active Learning Network for Accountability and Performance in Humanitarian Action (ALNAP) is a system-wide network organisation dedicated to improving the accountability and performance of humanitarian action by strengthening the humanitarian evidence base through sharing lessons, identifying key issues and, where appropriate, providing leadership to find collective approaches and solutions. Candidates are advised to familiarise themselves with the ALNAP network at www.alnap.org.

About you

The selected candidate will work across multiple research projects at ALNAP, with a primary focus on the fourth edition of the State of the Humanitarian System Report. The role of the Senior Research Officer – Evidence and Humanitarian Policy will be to design and implement robust research methodologies for small to mid-size projects, under the supervision of either a Research Fellow or ALNAP Head of Research and Impact, depending on the project.

The function of this role is to deliver strong internal research capacity for ALNAP to carry out case studies and mid-size thematic studies on topics related to humanitarian policy and performance. The successful individual will be expected to be familiar and comfortable with mixed methods research and the selection and design of research methods to fit a learning objective. Much of this work will fall within ALNAP’s two strategic focus areas: ‘Improving the quality of evaluations of humanitarian assistance and their related research and learning activities’.

This role will also have a networking function, as ALNAP’s research relies heavily on inputs and direction from ALNAP members. The successful candidate would therefore be expected to conduct research within the areas of evaluation, monitoring, evidential quality, information management and organisational learning while also meeting needs from the ALNAP memberships and coordinating network activities. A full description of all responsibilities within this role can be found in the application pack.
