ODI (odi.org) is an independent, global think tank. We work to inspire people to act on injustice and inequality. Through research, convening and influencing, we generate ideas that matter for people and planet.

We are looking for a Communications Officer who will enhance the impact of our work on migration, poverty, inequality and social policy. They will deliver first class communications to influence development policy and practice and further strengthen the effectiveness, awareness and reputation of the Equity and Social Policy Programme.

This role will focus on the MIGNEX project, a five year collaboration between nine member institutions across in Europe, Africa and Asia that studies the links between migration, development and policy, seeking to connect migration management and development cooperation in new and better ways. The communications officer will have an exciting, creative and responsible role as the main communications contact point for MIGNEX, leading and contributing to a diverse range of communication activities.

The communications officer will also support the delivery of effective communications outputs and activities for the Equity and Social Policy (ESP) programme. ESP leads research, analysis and informed policy debate on poverty, inequality and the role of social policy. Migration and its links with poverty, inequality, social protection and education and labour policies is included within ESP’s portfolio. Recent programme highlights include:

  • A research project on social protection measures adopted since the onset of the Covid-19 crisis, and lessons to take for adaptive social protection.
  • A global conference on the Global Reset: inequality and time for a new social contract
  • Innovative methodology development and communication thereof on sampling respondents in migration surveys

About you

  • Educated to at least degree level.
  • Demonstrable interest in migration, social policy, poverty and inequality
  • Practical experience in a comparable communications post.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Experience of working with research content
  • Practical website skills and good knowledge of communications through web- based and social media tools.
  • A good grasp of design principles.
  • Excellent IT and data management skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, Access.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Good interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise and communicate with colleagues at all levels of seniority and from different cultures.
  • Good organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Ability to work to strict deadlines and under pressure.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
