ODI’s Agricultural Development and Policy Programme seeks to move thinking forward on how to feed 9 billion people by 2050 without imperilling the planet and people’s lives. As part of our broader work on agricultural development processes, we have a strong and growing workstream on improving land governance that contributes to this aim, focusing on enhancing:

  • security of access to land and other natural resources;

  • benefits to households and host countries from their use of property rights; and

  • the efficient use of land resources to meet the heightened challenges facing agriculture

    This is an exciting opportunity to join ADP and contribute to its work on land governance. We are looking to recruit a suitable candidate to join ADP and contribute to developing, fundraising for, conducting and managing policy relevant, high-quality and innovative research, policy advice and public affairs programmes, broadly within the Institute’s overall strategy and with the aim of inspiring and informing policy.

    This position will have a specific emphasis on quantitative research, and will involve contributing to building a dataset and body of analytical work on tenure security around the world and linking this to the development outcomes including economic growth and social outcomes under the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

    Responsibilities include:

  • Research and policy advisory work*:* conducting high-quality applied research focused on existing and new projects on land governance and tenure.

  • Public affairs: disseminating and promoting ADP’s work and ideas through high-level meetings, ODI publications and blogs, and other media.

  • Fundraising: contributing/attracting funds through bids, including the development of a substantial personal research portfolio

About you

The successful candidate will have:

  • A degree and a post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline [development economics, economic history, agricultural economics, or related. Where the candidate has a background in social sciences, demonstration of quantitative competencies skills is essential.

  • Significant experience in an international policy development research environment, i.e. policy-oriented research, demonstrated by publications and reports

  • Strong analytical, quantitative and organisational skills, including the ability to manage a complex and varied workload to tight deadlines

  • Active knowledge of key organisations in the land and agricultural sector, and in the broader development sector;

  • Demonstrable knowledge of academic and policy treatment of land governance issues. This includes a good understanding of the role of secure land tenure in contributing to social and economic development in developing countries.

  • Knowledge of global poverty and broader development datasets and their application for measuring development progress.

  • Excellent knowledge of research methodologies for quantitative socioeconomic research and ability to analyse quantitative and qualitative data.
