We are looking for a Senior Communications Officer (Events Lead) to increase the impact of ODI’s humanitarian, risk and resilience and gender research among existing and new target audiences through the delivery of first-class communications, with a focus on events (70% of time) as well as publications, digital outputs, media and public affairs support (30%). Substantial experience in a comparable communications post, demonstrable success in convening high-profile events in the UK and internationally, and knowledge/experience of risk and resilience research, policy issues and agendas are all essential.
Key responsibilities include:
Lead the development, casting and delivery of an ambitious and influential series of events, round-tables and seminars within and across ODI’s humanitarian, risk and resilience, and gender programmes.
Monitor external trends and ‘hot topics’ and pitch event concepts that place ODI’s research at the cutting edge of the news and policy agenda.
Work with researchers to develop, produce and promote innovative event formats, programmes and materials to communicate ODI’s expert analysis.
Secure and brief diverse, high profile and engaging speakers and chairs.
Effectively project manage the production of public events, roundtables and conferences to deadline, budget and high-quality thresholds.
As part of the post’s general communications duties, work flexibly across the humanitarian, risk and resilience and gender programmes to deliver on a range of communications activities, supporting publications, digital and multimedia outputs, media and public affairs.
About you:
- Substantial practical experience in a comparable communications post, with demonstrable success in convening high-profile events in the UK and internationally
- Experience of working with international networks and partners and securing influential and high-level panellists and participants
- Experience of briefing and coaching others to present at high-level events
- Proven knowledge/experience of risk and resilience research, policy issues and agendas
Line management experience
Excellent organisational, prioritisation and project management skills
Self-starter – able to generate plans and ideas and carry them through to completion
Strong negotiation/diplomacy skills and excellent interpersonal/relationship-building skills
Strong writing skills with ability to summarise complex, technical content in clear, web-friendly language
