The Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow / Principal Research Fellow (depending on experience) will be responsible for the development and delivery of a portfolio of research and policy advice on social protection and social policy. The portfolio will reflect the Social Protection and Social Policy Programme’s (SPSPP) strategic priorities as well as the candidate’s skills and preferences. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates with demonstrable experience in the following areas:
impact evaluation of social policies
social protection, work and employment
social protection, migration and/or urbanisation
social protection, risk and resilience
social policy and social protection financing
social protection systems building, links to health and education policy
social protection, poverty, inequality and the SDGs.
You will work closely with the Head of Programme and SPSPP Research Fellows and will join a growing team of researchers working on major themes in social protection and social policy. You will lead and contribute to policy research and advisory projects, often cross-country and cross-institutional, engage with policy-makers in research and advisory processes and disseminate results.
Recruitment will be at Research Fellow level, with the applicable grade to be assessed through the selection process. Key responsibilities include:
Research and Funding: developing and leading policy relevant research, including the production of outputs (e.g. research reports, journal articles, policy briefings and blogs) on social protection and social policy. This includes attracting funds through the identification of funding opportunities, development of bids, and pro-active promotion of the Programme’s work.
Project Management: taking responsibility for the implementation and overall management of research, advisory and public affairs projects.
Policy Advice, Public Affairs, and Dissemination: maximising the potential influence of the SPSPP’s research and technical advice through the dissemination of research, engagement with key stakeholders and other activities, such as the development of content for the ODI website and media engagement.

The successful candidate will have:
A post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline such as economics, public policy, social policy, political science or development studies (a PhD in a relevant discipline is desirable);
Extensive knowledge of key issues in social protection (including on specific instruments e.g. in-kind and cash transfers, active labour market programmes, subsidies and their financing, targeting, delivery and monitoring) and/or related links to jobs, and health and education services;
Substantial experience in policy-oriented research, demonstrated by a track record of publications and reports on social protection and/or related areas of social policy;
Substantial experience in international organisations and strong knowledge of actors working on social protection and social policy;
Demonstrable experience in research dissemination and in achieving uptake of research;
Demonstrated ability to win work and attract funds;
Strong project management and leadership skills;
Fluency in English, and preferably a good command of at least one other language.
