With a turnover of over £30m per year and an average of 300 ongoing projects, ODI is looking for a Director of Project Management to lead our project management function, working with ODI’s thematic programmes to deliver high quality outputs and coordinate resources across the organisation.
About the role
The Director of Project Management will lead the development and implementation of strategies and plans for the Project Management function including being accountable for its strategic and financial performance in support of ODI-wide and programme priorities. He/she will collaborate closely with Directors of Programme to co-manage projects through a matrix management arrangement.
The Director will drive the implementation and continuous improvement of PM principles, standards, practices and methodologies and will work closely with other functional teams – including Finance, Business Development and Public Affairs and Communications – to foster organisational effectiveness, strategic alignment and efficiency across ODI.
The Director will directly supervise three Strategic Operations Managers and together with them, will lead the development and management of an effective team of around 40 project management staff who are allocated to supporting ODI’s programmes.
About you
You will be a strong believer in values-driven leadership and be committed to leading, nurturing and supporting diverse teams and the professional development of colleagues (including mentoring junior staff). You will provide the overall vision and direction for implementing an effective project management infrastructure.
You will be able to plan, lead, inspire, influence and contribute to ODI’s senior management forums to drive the implementation of the Institiute’s business and operating framework.
You’ll also have:

- A Master’s degree or equivalent level of experience
- Extensive knowledge of and experience in project cycle management and methodologies
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of business models for think tanks or similar organisations
- Experience of working in and strengthening client-focused and/or matrix management functions withinorganisations
- Substantial experience of establishing complex systems and procedures and ensuring compliance across teams and organisations
- Strategic thinking and ability to translate strategies into successful operational plans
