With a turnover of over £30m per year and an average of 300 projects on an ongoing basis, ODI is looking for three Strategic Operations Managers to coordinate its project management function for a group of thematic programmes.
About the role
The Strategic Operations Manager will work with Directors of Programmes to understand programme portfolios, finances and plans in order to provide strategic project management support to programmes. Together with the Director of Project Management, they will plan resource allocation, forecast and model demands on resources for support to programmes. He/she will work in partnership with Directors of Programmes and with the Head of Business Development to support strategic decision-making in the development of ODI’s project portfolio. The Strategic Operations Manager will work alongside the Director of Project Management to develop, champion and embed consistent project management standards and procedures across the function and contribute to their continuous improvement.
About you
You will be a strong believer in values-driven leadership and be interested in how to lead diverse teams well and support the professional development of colleagues (including mentoring junior staff), whilst also demonstrating strong understanding of business priorities. You will have a results-driven approach, great communication skills and will feel comfortable leading senior and junior project management staff.
You’ll also have:

- Education to Master’s degree level or equivalent level of experience
· Extensive knowledge of project cycle management and methodologies
· Extensive knowledge of costing methodologies and the ability to apply them
- Excellent understanding of financial management as part of the project cycle
· Significant experience of working within complex business models and of managing the performance of portfolios of projects to maximise their contribution to the organisation’s financial and strategic objectives
· Experience and knowledge of client-focused and/or matrix management models within organisations
· Experience in managing staff and planning resource allocationSignificant experience in donor compliance and administrative procedures and donor relationship management
