We are seeking to appoint a Senior Research Fellow or a Research Fellow to the Humanitarian Policy Group to lead our work on protection, principles and the politics of humanitarian action.
The Humanitarian Policy Group (HPG) is one of the world’s leading teams of policy researchers and analysts working on humanitarian issues. It combines high-quality policy analysis with a capacity to act as a neutral forum for dialogue and debate.
HPG is looking for analysts to lead, develop and implement research on protection of civilians and the principles and politics of humanitarian action. This includes undertaking innovative policy-relevant research and analysis, informing discussion and debate at all levels through direct engagement with policy makers, practitioners and business leaders and engaging with public debates on critical humanitarian issues through publications, media engagement, public speaking. The postholder will have the opportunity to develop their own research interests within the team’s broad areas of focus.
Recent programme highlights include:
- Gender in displacement: the state of play
- The humanitarian ‘digital divide’
- Dignity in displacement: from rhetoric to reality
- The Rohingya crisis: making the transition from emergency to longer-term development
- Constructive deconstruction: imagining alternative humanitarian action
- New financing partnerships for humanitarian impact
About you
You should have an ability to think critically, write clearly and communicate convincingly. Research Fellow positions require demonstrated experience in policy-relevant research and analysis. Senior Fellows should have a strong publication record, including analytical and public affairs work. Experience of working in, and on, conflict and protracted crises is desirable.
- a degree and post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline;
- extensive knowledge of issues related with conflict, protracted crises, civilian protection, and the politics of humanitarian action
- experience in policy-oriented research, demonstrated by a track record of publications and reports;
fluency in English, and preferably a good command of at least one other language;
strong analytical skills, a capacity to write clearly, and excellent organisational and oral communication skills;
a demonstrated capacity for policy advisory or public-affairs work, based on an analytical approach, and an innovative and creative communications ability;
ability to translate research ideas into fundable projects;**
ability to work as part of a team;
time management skills, including managing a complex and varied workload.
