This is an exciting opportunity to join ODI’s Centre for Aid and Public Expenditure (CAPE) and to contribute to a major programme on the future of development agencies. CAPE is a multidisciplinary research and advisory programme focusing on development agency strategy and reform, international financing for development, public financial management, and public sector reform in developing countries.
We are looking for a Research Officer to contribute to developing and conducting high-quality, innovative research, policy analysis and influencing in CAPE’s Future Development Agencies team. The role will contribute to this strategic focus area by facilitating, informing and supporting debate and policy action by development agencies – both old and new – to ensure they respond to the changing global development agenda and are relevant and effective. The work will include providing advice directly to agencies as they are established or attempt to reform.
The team’s recent highlights include:
Bilateral versus multilateral aid channels: Strategic choices for donors - developing decision-making criteria for donor countries allocating aid across bilateral and multilateral channels.
Multilateral development banks: A short guide - providing an accessible and up-to-date comparison of the mandates, structures and instruments of MDBs.
Designing the development agency of the future: framing paper - framing the current debate on the implications of a changing development landscape for donors and agencies.
Do organisational and political models for development cooperation matter for development effectiveness? - investigating the relationship between different institutional and political models for development cooperation.
Future Development Agencies Partner Platform– a virtual network of over 100 senior officials of foreign and development ministries and agencies, designed for sharing ideas, analysis and experiences on development cooperation.
A high-level conference on Building Resilient Development Agencies - examining what it means to be a relevant and resilient development agency in the new era of development cooperation.
About you:
The successful candidate will have:
- Advanced degree in economics or another relevant discipline.
- Working knowledge of issues and practice in development finance.
- Experience in an international development research environment or an international development institution.
- Excellent report – writing and presentation skills.
- Interpersonal and networking skills.
- Excellent IT skills and knowledge in widely-used econometric software packages.
- Willingness to travel on a frequent basis.
