An independent, global think tank, working for a sustainable

and peaceful world in which every person thrives.

About us

ODI (odi.org) is an independent, global think tank. We work to inspire people to act on injustice and inequality. Through research, convening and influencing, we generate ideas that matter for people and planet.

We are seeking to appoint up to two research fellows to support our work looking at the role that public finances will need to play, both at the national and international level, to support a more equitable and sustainable global economic order.

The successful candidates will work on delivering high-quality research, analysis and policy engagement with ODI colleagues as well as in collaboration with partner governments and research institutes based in Africa, South-East Europe and Asia (through for example the TAXDEV programme).

The seniority of the roles will depend upon the candidates’ experience and competencies. Positions could be at the equivalent level of Senior Research Fellow or Research Fellow

The location of the roles is flexible where candidates can demonstrate that their work location can make a strategic contribution to the overall programme of work.

All potential candidates are encouraged to apply, while we particularly encourage applicants from historically underrepresented, equity deserving, groups. Candidates from outside of the UK, who can support ODI’s ambitions to be a more global organisation are especially encouraged to apply.

Our programme of work

We are looking for candidates who can contribute to one of the following three growing streams of work:

  1. Taxation and public finance and how the design of tax and transfers can better support different policy objectives including economic growth, addressing inequalities and promoting environmental sustainability,
  2. International public finance and the role of international financial institutions in helping to address inequalities across nations and building resilience to global threats.
  3. The role of public finances in strengthening service delivery with a particular focus on the intersection of public finance and health financing.

The people we are looking for

The successful candidate(s) will be able to provide intellectual leadership in one of the thematic areas highlighted above. The candidates we are looking for would be comfortable with applying macro and microeconomic concepts to practical policy questions, familiar with relevant datasets and able to present novel research and analysis in a compelling way.

Research fellows are also expected to influence the international debate through public affairs activities including publications, media engagement, speaking at conferences, and providing advice to governments and international organisations at a senior level. We would be particularly interested to hear from candidates who have first-hand experience working inside government or in major financial institutions to help inform pragmatic perspectives on reform.

Closing date: Sunday 16th January 2022

Interview date: TBC
