We are seeking to appoint a Research Officer to join ALNAP. Under the supervision of the Senior Evaluation Research Fellow, the post holder will contribute to designing and delivering innovative, high-quality and policy-relevant research, policy advice and public-affairs initiatives. You will contribute to policy research and advisory projects with a focus on Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning and Accountability, and engage with humanitarians, M&E practioners and policymakers in research and advisory processes, and disseminate results. This role has both a research and networking function and will also involve planning of international workshops, events, webinars and virtual trainings. The successful candidate would be expected to conduct research within the areas of evaluation, monitoring, evidential quality, information management and organisational learning for humanitarian action while also meeting needs from the ALNAP memberships and coordinating network activities.
Please note: This is an international role. The role does not require the candidate to live in the UK or to relocate to the UK, if successful. The role also does not require the candidate to have an existing right to work in the UK. ODI/ALNAP will seek to facilitate a contract where the successful candidate is based internationally. The Active Learning Network for Accountability and Performance in Humanitarian Action (ALNAP) is a system-wide network organisation dedicated to improving the accountability and performance of humanitarian action by strengthening the humanitarian evidence base through sharing lessons, identifying key issues and, where appropriate, providing leadership to find collective approaches and solutions. About you
Research Officer
- A degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent relevant experience in thehumanitarian and/ or development sector or relevant M&E experience .
- Knowledge of key humanitarian and development institutions and major humanitarian policy issues desirable
- Knowledge of key monitoring and evaluation policies and practices, including practical experience conducting M&E work (with a strong preference for experience in M&E in a humanitarian response setting)
- Passionate about improving the performance of humanitarian action
- Experience in producing research outputs.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate successfully and cultural awareness.
- Excellent analytical and writing skills
- Fluent in English (written and spoken) with fluency in a second language (Arabic, French, Spanish, etc highly desirable)
- Experience in event planning highly desirable, such as previous experience organising webinars, workshops, trainings, etc
- Good presentation and networking skills.
- Multitasking skills.
- Excellent IT skills (Word, Excel, Power Point).
- Willingness to travel, which may include overnight and weekends on occasion.
- Ability to work on own initiative.
Senior Research Officer
- A degree and post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent relevant experience in the humanitarian and/ or development sector or relevant M&E experience .
- Knowledge of key humanitarian and development institutions and major humanitarian policy issues
- Strong knowledge of monitoring and evaluation policies and practices, including practical experience conducting M&E work (with a strong preference for experience in M&E in a humanitarian response setting)
- Passionate about improving the performance of humanitarian action
- Experience working in a humanitarian response setting and/or lived experience in a developing country
- Significant experience in an international or regional policy development or research environment, i.e. policy-oriented research and guidance development, demonstrated by publications and reports.
- Experience in event planning, such as previous experience organising webinars, workshops, trainings, etc
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate successfully with a wide range of people and cultural awareness.
- Excellent analytical and writing skills.
- Strong presentation and networking skills.
- Multitasking skills.
- Fluency in English (written and spoken) and fluency in a language other than English (Arabic, French, Spanish, etc) highly desirable
- Excellent IT skills (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
- Willingness to travel, which may include overnight and weekends on occasion.
- Ability to work on own initiative and under minimal supervision, to accept responsibility and to respond with confidence to complex and evolving problems.
